Jon Shain

Songwriter and guitarist Jon Shain was born in the mill town of Haverhill, Massachusetts. He relocated to Durham in 1986, where he studied American history at Duke University. Dedicated to American roots music of all stripes since his teenage years, Shain was soon learning to play the Piedmont blues first-hand, as a member of bluesman Big Boy Henry's backing band, and taking notes from other North Carolina guitar legends such as John Dee Holeman. In 1989, Shain founded the Chapel Hill-based Flyin' Mice, a band that released four albums and toured extensively, sharing stages with performers like David Grisman, Hot Tuna, Leon Russell, and the Dave Matthews Band.

Following the dissolution of Flyin' Mice in 1998, Shain returned to the folk and blues circuit, releasing Brand New Lifetime in 1999, followed by Fools and Fine Ladies in 2001. 2003 saw the release of Shain's acclaimed No Tag, No Tail Light, an album that earned rave reviews from publications such as Sing Out!, No Depression, Relix, and Dirty Linen. Home Before Long followed in 2005, and Army Jacket Winter in 2007. In 2010, Shain appeared on WUNC's The State of Things to discuss his most recent album, Times Right Now.

In live performances, Jon Shain is accompanied by F. J. Venture on bass, John Currie on guitar and Dobro, and Bill Newton on harmonica. Together, the quartet has played such esteemed venues as Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York, and Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and performed served as the opening act for renowned performers including John Hiatt, Keb' Mo', and Little Feat.

In addition to recording and performing, Shain--whose work touches on the trials and tribulations of regular people, and themes of social justice--teaches Piedmont blues guitar, and leads songwriting workshops.
