Mariachi music combines elements of indigenous Mexican music with musical styles from a variety of other cultures, such as the waltz and the fandango from Europe as well as many dance rhythms and melodic ideas from Africa. Modern mariachi bands typically feature trumpets, guitars, and violins, among other instruments. Today, mariachi bands are known to perform for many different occasions, such as dances, weddings, funerals, birthdays, and more. It is not unusual to find a mariachi group serenading a young woman on the occasion of her birthday, celebrating a saint's day, or singing to the mother of one of the band members on her birthday. Charros de Mexico, a mariachi band based in Greenville and Washington, NC (Pitt & Beaufort counties) will share this traditional Mexican music form to close out the Six Sundays in Spring concerts. Enjoy this spirited dance music in Wake Forest's spacious and beautiful E Carroll Joyner Park this summer!
