Lakota John & Kin bring their unique blend of blues and Native American music to Wake Forest as part of this year’s annual Wake Forest Unplugged…Get Connected during Labor Day weekend. Treat yourselves and your family to a great day of activities and music! This NC-based band released their self-titled debut album near the end of 2013 on the Music Maker label, and this year, they are nominated for a Native American Music Award in the Best Blues Recording category. The band’s debut record features the talents of Mama Tonya, Papa John, and Sister Layla — a proud Lumbee and Oglala Nation family of talented musicians. Blending traditional styles of the Delta and Piedmont acoustic blues with bottle-neck slide guitar and a mix of Chicago electric blues, Locklear’s unique sound is also sprinkled with a bit of harmonica and influences from his indigenous heritage, including sounds of the Native American flute. Lakota John is among the latest in a long line of blues musicians who celebrated their Native American heritage, including Delta bluesman Charlie Patton (part Cherokee), among others. Locklear captivates his audiences with his unique blues style and “old man” soulful blues vocals, and together, Lakota John & Kin continue to stir the musical southern stew with their ancestors’ ancient harmonies and traditional blues melded together.

Bring a picnic, leashed pets, a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music. Food will also be available for purchase on-site. Concert-goers are reminded that alcoholic beverages, smoking, firearms, and unleashed pets are prohibited at Joyner Park. In the event of inclement weather, updated concert information will be e-mailed to PineCone’s e-mail lists and posted to the PineCone Facebook and Twitter feeds, and information will also be available by 3 p.m. on the day of the concert on Wake Forest TV 10, on the Town of Wake Forest’s Facebook page, or by calling the Wake Forest Weather Line at 919-435-9569.
