The North Carolina Heritage Awards, a program of the North Carolina Arts Council, returns to honor our state’s masters of the traditional arts. The 2016 North Carolina Heritage Award recipients are: Maceo Parker, internationally-recognized funk, jazz and rhythm and blues musician (Kinston, Lenoir County); Sheila Kay Adams, a seventh-generation ballad singer, storyteller, and musician (Sodom Laurel, Madison County); Montagnard Dega weavers H Ju Nie and H Ngach Rahlan, who brought their mastery of spinning, dying, and weaving from the highlands of Vietnam (Greensboro, Guilford County); Houston, James and Jamie Lewis, fourth generation boatbuilders from the Harkers Island tradition (Harkers Island, Carteret County); and Marc Pruett, renowned banjo player, songwriter, and part of the renowned bluegrass band Balsam Range (Canton, Haywood County). We look forward to honoring and celebrating these remarkable artists in Raleigh in the spring – reserve your seats for a show that celebrates these masters of our state’s traditional arts in a unique concert and awards presentation! (Photos, top row, left to right: Sheila Kay Adams, singing and playing banjo; Marc Pruett, seated with banjo over his right shoulder; Maceo Parker, seated with saxaphone; Bottom row, left to right: Jamie and Houston Lewis of Lewis Family Boat Builders; H Ju Nie, seated on a stool with one of her weavings; not pictured: H Nglach Rahlan)

This year’s ceremony will feature performances by Balsam Range, Maceo Parker with his band, and Sheila Kay Adams with Laura Boosinger and Branson Raines.

The evening will also feature video profiles by award-winning filmmaker Rodrigo Dorfman and on-stage interviews with the award recipients. And all ceremony attendees are invited to to meet the master artists at a reception following the ceremony in the lobby of the Fletcher Opera Theater.

The North Carolina Arts Council created the Heritage Award program to recognize outstanding traditional artists with a lifetime achievement award. More than 100 North Carolinians from our state’s music, craft, dance, and narrative traditions, among others, have received this important recognition. These recipients have spent their lives learning, honing, and sharing their artistry. They are elders within their traditions who are widely respected for their skills and knowledge, and this year’s honorees are all masters in their respective fields as well.

Note: Fletcher Opera Theater is wheelchair accessible, and listening devices are available as well. If you have specific questions, seating needs, or accommodation requests, please call Jamie Katz Court or Courtney Wheeler at 919-664-8302. Learn more about accessibility at PineCone events
